gregers Posted January 13, 2008 Report Posted January 13, 2008 HELP PEEPS,was driving the car today and a horrible screeching noise started coming from the engine area, finally sussed it down to something to do with the heating(only seems to do this with the heating on!!). q/1....wot do you reckon it could be?????? q/2....is it safe to drive??????? q/3....HOW MUCH IS THIS LIKELY TO DENT MY WALLET(it is still under warranty(if the item is covered????) any help plz regards gregers Quote
Rusty Nail Posted January 13, 2008 Report Posted January 13, 2008 Hi gregers You say it's something to do with the heating - is the noise related to fan on / heated screens on etc? Could it be alternator drive belt squeal due to increased electrical load? Just a thought. Quote
gregers Posted January 13, 2008 Author Report Posted January 13, 2008 rusty i thought it mite be a squeal(belts)etc thats bad,but its the strange grauncing noise when the fans(heating)are turned off.if its squeal?wot needs to be done to stop the noise?. im trying to search the forum for something similar but i dont know wot its related too?. gregers Posted January 13, 2008 Author Report Posted January 13, 2008 well think im suffering from the dreaded alternator pulley going tits up.as in this very informative threadhttp://www.fordgalaxy.org.uk/ford/index.php?showtopic=11428 now to go back to the dealers to see if its covered under the warranty??????? adrianf. Posted January 13, 2008 Report Posted January 13, 2008 Hi Gregers, i had the alternator pulley go on the Gal i used to own but had no strange noises with it. First thing i noticed was the PAS was juddery at tick over One post on here i found to be usefull was to to see if the blades inside the alternator turned in both directions as they should with a good pulley. The info is in that link you found somewhere Quote
chromedome Posted January 13, 2008 Report Posted January 13, 2008 Was the heating on "AUTO"? Could be the a/c kicked in and the compresser may be seized. When you put heating back in "ECON" the a/c is switched off. Quote
Beyond Help? Posted January 14, 2008 Report Posted January 14, 2008 I would check the AC first too, sounds like the compressor clutch bearings, try turning the air-con on and off and see if the noise comes and goes. Quote
gregers Posted January 14, 2008 Author Report Posted January 14, 2008 (edited) well have had to book it into the garage tomorrow for them to find out wot the fault could be,typical i must use this garage because of the warranty and depending on what they find will depend on whether it is covered by the warranty(CATCH TWENTY 2 SITUATION)and it it isnt i will have to pay for there time in diagnosing the problem. chromedome/beyond help. just gone outside AND YOU ARE INDEED CORRECT it is making the horrendous noise switching between auto and economy, looking through my warranty schedule it says 12 months/up to individual claims limit of ......purchase price, the air conditioning hasnt been high lighted,ME THINKS MY KIDS ARE GOING TO GO HUNGRY  THANX FOR THE REPLYS SO FAR CHAPS..ETS. p/s.. if it isnt covered is it safe to keep on driving the car without using the aircon?ie does the compressor run anything else etc etc???. Edited January 14, 2008 by gregers Quote
chromedome Posted January 14, 2008 Report Posted January 14, 2008 Should be ok in ECON mode. When you switch to AUTO an electronic clutch engages and activates the compressor. Quote
gregers Posted January 14, 2008 Author Report Posted January 14, 2008 thanx m8any idea on how much a new unit is likely to cost? Quote
Rusty Nail Posted January 14, 2008 Report Posted January 14, 2008 I thought compressors costed upwards of Quote
gregers Posted January 15, 2008 Author Report Posted January 15, 2008 WELL HAVE BEEN TOLD ITS DEFO THE COMPRESSOR APPARENTLY ITS TOTALLY FUBARED.MY 3 KIDS ARE FOR SALE NOW.793 QUID TO SORT OUT as its not covered under the warranty(mmmmm DONT BLOODY THINK ILL BE HAVING THAT DONE THEN) have been told to keep the climate panel turned off?is this right?does this mean i have no heating in the car at all or blowers for when the car steams up?never really understood the correct way of operating the climate panel anyway,as it always comes on automatically when i start the car would you suggest pulling the fuse out to stop this happening? thanx for your help so far, any one got a spare compressor?swap a booster heater for it(it finally turned up begining of last week :18: ) Quote
raymac Posted January 15, 2008 Report Posted January 15, 2008 you can have the heating on as long as you keep it Econ mode and if you shop around you will get an idependent to supply and fit new compressor for a lot cheaper than what you have been quoted :18: Quote

gregers Posted January 15, 2008 Author Report Posted January 15, 2008 thanx again raymac,at least the missus wont be bending my ear too much. ok ill take a looksie in daylight to get the codes off of mine, would you recomend new?or getting 1 from a scrappy(i know u takes ur chance etc etc)or would it be throwing bad money after even badder money? regards gregers Quote
Rusty Nail Posted January 15, 2008 Report Posted January 15, 2008 It depends on the breakers, reputable ones cost a bit more but should guarantee the parts as working (may only be a short guarantee but long enough to get it checked out). Recon is next best as should be tested etc and guaranteed, else loadsa wonga for the new.The choise is usually wallet dependant (I know it is in my world). Quote

gregers Posted January 16, 2008 Author Report Posted January 16, 2008 thanx for the pointers,i know wot you mean RUSTY it happens in my world as well ;) i am keeping an eye on the 1st one raymac, could you tell me what it all involves in changing the compressor, does the aircon need recharging ?or is there a way of clamping pipes etc so you can retain the refrigerant?just so im forearmed ;) Quote
raymac Posted January 17, 2008 Report Posted January 17, 2008 If you are going to fit compressor yourelf i would be inclined to get the system drained and flushed just in the off chance that bits of debris that may have come away from your old unit when it seized then after fitting get the system recharged ;) Read this article i found, it may help you decide which way round you tackle it Many customers have experienced Ford Galaxy Aircon compressors not pumping correctly on the above vehicles, sometimes this has been on the original Ford Galaxy AC compressor but more often than not on replacement new or remanufactured A/C compressors that are fitted. The problem that occurs is that the air con compressor will pump the refrigerant for 20 minutes and then cease to pump anymore, giving the impression that the replacement Ford Galxy Air Con compressor is faulty. Our Suppliers have done extensive investigating into this problem, and have now found the reasons behind this occurrence. In the majority of cases that we have discovered the vehicle has had an ac condenser and a/c compressor change, this can result in the system being Quote
chazy Posted January 17, 2008 Report Posted January 17, 2008 Just reading this post does it happen more on wet days than dry days? If so, I had the same problem and it was the front bearing in the air conditioning unit and a good squirt of white grease once a month keeps it at bay. Quote
gregers Posted January 17, 2008 Author Report Posted January 17, 2008 Just reading this post does it happen more on wet days than dry days? If so, I had the same problem and it was the front bearing in the air conditioning unit and a good squirt of white grease once a month keeps it at bay. apparently it has disintegrated, was chatting to my m8 last night who can replace the compressor but cannot do the drain or recharge of the refrigerant, are kwik fit still doing aircon recharges?and if so do you reckon they would remove the refrigerant and store it for me while i have the new compressor fitted?obviously will be trying to keep costs to an absolute minimum, hence why im asking, cant see many garages doing it if they aint getting the work. Quote
raymac Posted January 18, 2008 Report Posted January 18, 2008 (edited) If it has disintegrated then i would get it flushed as there may be bits of the old compressor in the system, if you fit something new like that then you should always have new refrigerant and oil put in it,no point in spending all that money then trying to save a few bob by cutting corners, it will only cost you more in the long run ,but that's only my opinion  Edited January 18, 2008 by raymac Quote
